Consumers Substituting Online TV for Cable

Nearly a fifth of Internet users watch video online almost every day. Women are catching up to men in terms of online video usage. And a growing number of recession-conscious Americans claim they are using the Web as a cable TV substitute.

Those are some of the more noteworthy research nuggets found in the latest report issued on Wednesday (July 29) by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, which focused specifically on online video. According to the report, 19 percent of Internet users surveyed claim they visit video sites in a typical day, up from 8 percent just three years ago. Read More…

Even More Support For Local Radio Freedom Act

WASHINGTON — July 16, 2009: Support continues to grow for the Local Radio Freedom Act, a resolution opposing performance royalties for broadcast radio. The resolution is in opposition to the Performance Rights Act, which would force radio to pay the royalties for the first time. House Committee Rejects Fairness Doctrine Ban

WASHINGTON — July 15, 2009: Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) says he is “profoundly disappointed” by the House Rules Committee’s vote against the Broadcaster Freedom Amendment. The bill, which would have blocked the FCC from reinstating the Fairness Doctrine or enacting proposed localism regulations for the next fiscal year, was introduced as an amendment to the Financial Services Appropriations Bill by Pence and Rep. Only 8% of Advertisers Say Twitter is Effective Promo Tool

Though Twitter is currently in the spotlight as a media darling, only 8% of advertisers and consumers think it’s a very effective promotion tool, according to Harris Poll results from a LinkedIn Research Network/Harris Poll.

The study also found that advertisers are more likely than consumers to know about Twitter and are more likely to believe in the microblogging tool’s future power to help promote products and services. Read More…

KSDS’ Efforts Recognized By Corporation For Public Broadcasting

KSDS Jazz 88.3 FM has been honored with a My Source Community Impact Award for Engagement, given each year by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The station will be recognized at a CPB luncheon at the Radio Development & Marketing Conference taking place at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel on July 8, 2009.

The award acknowledges the station for its music education initiatives in the San Diego community, including its support for the annual Music Matters instrument donation program for city schools and the annual CMEA middle and high-school jazz festival. Read More…

Local Station Manager Honored As Jazz Educator Of The Year

KSDS Jazz 88 station manager Mark DeBoskey was recently honored as “Jazz Educator of the Year” by the California Association of Music Education (CMEA) Southern Border Section. The long-time leader of San Diego City College’s broadcast service was recognized for his outstanding contributions to jazz music education in San Diego city schools by supporting the CMEA High School Jazz Festival, held at the City College campus for the past five years.

According to Merryl Nelson, president of the local CMEA, “Mark has done great work in helping make this festival happen year after year. He and his team have coordinated the event on campus…providing a great experience for the students.”

“It’s my very favorite thing that Jazz 88 does in the community,” says DeBoskey. “Our future, musically and in every other way, is in the kids who practice their craft that day. It’s a great joy to see their joy in jazz performance and in self-expression that day.”

Hold the Pickles, Add Lots of Radio

It took only one radio station – KBZT-FM – to get the results the Gaglione Brothers needed to see their business increase substantially at their two San Diego sandwich shops. The effective use of Radio won the Gaglione Brothers and the station a 2009 EAR Award.

Using four different commercials that covered topics such as the pronunciation of the family name and the authenticity of their cheese steak sandwiches, the Gaglione Brothers themselves served as the talent and delivered the messages hungry people were obviously ready to hear. Remembering Gary Cocker

Gary Cocker

Long time San Diego Radio personality Gary Cocker has died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 59. Gary (real name Helmut Kerling) started his career in Cleveland but spent many years on Southern California Radio stations, including KGB-AM, KCBQ, KPRI and KFMB-AM as well as several stations in Los Angeles. Additionally, he did voice work in television and handled production for a variety of clients in the region. A tribute to Gary can be found on SDRadio.net (June 26). He will be missed by many friends in Radio.
