Weekday circulation for The San Diego Union-Tribune stood at 261,253 on March 31, down from 288,785 on the same day last year, according to a report released April 27 by the Audit Bureau of Circulations. The ABC takes snapshots of newspapers’ circulation figures every six months — on the last days of March and September.

The Union-Tribune’s Saturday circulation was 307,554 compared with 327,694 at the end of March 2008, while Sunday circulation was 330,848, down from 355,537.

Beverly Hills-based Platinum Equity is buying the county’s sole major daily newspaper. The Copley Press of La Jolla, which owns the U-T, put it on the block in July. The sale is expected to be finalized this quarter.

The North County Times, a Lee Enterprises publication based in Escondido, saw weekday circulation fall to 78,181 from 88,677, while Saturday circulation fell to 70,468 from 79,726 and Sunday’s fell to 79,067 from 87,511, according to the ABC report.
